The Solar Regulator / Charge Controller is connected to the solar panel, the battery and the load. Its purpose is to help maintain battery condition and it does this in a number of ways.
1) Prevents battery damage from over charging cutting the supply when full charge is reached
2) Stops the battery being damaged by over discharging, the primary cause of battery failure
3) Halts the flow of power back from the battery to the solar panel during the night
